As Africa continues to establish itself as a global travel destination, gastronomy tourism is emerging as a key pillar in its sustainable tourism development. In an effort to further this growth, UN Tourism, in collaboration with the Basque Culinary Center and the United Republic of Tanzania, is set to host the Second Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Africa in Arusha, Tanzania, from April 23–25, 2025.

This leading initiative by UN Tourism aims to position gastronomy tourism as a driving force for sustainable and inclusive development across the continent. Building upon the success of the first edition held in Zimbabwe, the forum will bring together chefs, policymakers, tourism leaders, entrepreneurs, and influencers to explore strategies that enhance Africa’s tourism competitiveness through its diverse culinary heritage.

The Role of Gastronomy in Africa’s Sustainable Tourism

Gastronomy tourism is an integral part of UN Tourism’s Agenda for Africa – Tourism for Inclusive Growth. The sector not only serves as a powerful economic driver, but it also contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage, enhances local community empowerment, and strengthens the tourism value chain.

Supported by Tanzanian leadership, including President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Minister of Tourism and Natural Resources Dr. Pindi Hazara Chana, the forum aims to highlight Africa’s culinary traditions while promoting sustainable tourism practices.

Zurab Pololikashvili, UN Tourism Secretary-General, emphasized the importance of the forum, stating that this event will celebrate Africa’s rich flavors and diverse culinary talent while driving economic development and job creation.

Tanzania: A Growing Culinary and Cultural Tourism Hub

With its diverse food culture, rich heritage, and increasing focus on sustainable tourism, Tanzania is an ideal host for this prestigious event. Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Pindi Hazara Chana, expressed Tanzania’s enthusiasm in welcoming global and African tourism stakeholders to experience the country’s vibrant culinary scene.

She highlighted how gastronomy tourism serves as a powerful tool for cultural exchange, strengthening community-driven economic opportunities and fostering regional tourism collaborations.

Joxe Mari Aizega, Director General of the Basque Culinary Center, noted that innovation, creativity, and sustainability are key components of transforming gastronomy tourism in Africa. He emphasized that the forum will provide a strategic platform for culinary tourism stakeholders to develop policies and practices that benefit both local communities and the environment.

The forum will focus on expanding Africa’s gastronomy tourism sector by strengthening the tourism value chain, fostering economic resilience, and developing talent through education and training. Key discussions will explore:
