As the world strives for carbon neutrality, various industries globally are embracing green transformation, and the tourism sector is no exception. A report from Booking, the world’s largest online travel platform, reveals that 76% of travelers prioritize eco-friendly destinations. This growing demand is encouraging tourist spots to focus on adopting sustainable practices. Among the most effective solutions for achieving this green shift is solar power, which offers efficient energy generation and sustainable benefits, making it a top choice for transforming tourist destinations.

Bohol, the first UNESCO Global Geopark in the Philippines, is leading the way in green transformation and setting an example for sustainable development in tourist destinations. In 2023, Bohol saw a 313% increase in tourist numbers. To support this growth, the province turned to clean energy solutions, with the Dagohoy Solar Power Project (DSPP) being a standout initiative. This marks the first large-scale solar power project in the region.

The DSPP is a collaboration between Dagohoy Green Energy Company (DGEC), a subsidiary of Yang Yinglin Group Corporation (YGC), the Department of Energy (DOE), and the local government of Bohol. The project has an installed capacity of 27MW, using Trina Solar Supreme modules. With a generation capacity of 41,000 MWh, it can power 18,000 homes and major tourist spots like the Chocolate Hills and the Taseer Sanctuary, home to the world’s smallest primates. The project began generating electricity in November 2024.

Trina Solar’s Supreme modules feature a double-sided, double-glass design, offering high efficiency, reliability, and low electricity costs. These modules perform well in extreme conditions, such as high temperatures and humidity, ensuring stable power generation for years. This innovative solar technology is ideal for Bohol’s eco-tourism sector, ensuring a continuous power supply in remote or weather-sensitive areas.

Wang Zhengzheng, head of Trina Solar’s Asia Pacific Southeast Asia, South Asia and Central Asia region, mentioned “The Dagohoy photovoltaic power generation project is an important milestone towards a net-zero future. Trina Solar’s leading photovoltaic solutions help transform the local energy system and empower communities. This project is a clear example of the vital role renewable energy can play in meeting the growing demand for clean electricity.”

He further added, “The success of Bohol highlights the huge potential of photovoltaic power generation to help transform the tourism industry in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, setting an example for regions that want to balance economic growth and environmental responsibility. As the demand for sustainable tourism continues to increase, renewable energy solutions such as photovoltaics are critical to boosting tourism and maintaining environmental resilience.

Maria Victoria M. Olivar, Vice President of Business Development and Commercial Operations of PetroGreen Energy Corporation (PGEC), stated “The Dagohoy photovoltaic power project further promotes Bohol’s move towards a sustainable future. We are honored to partner with Trina Solar to jointly provide attractive The project increases the proportion of clean energy in Bohol and enhances its environmental resilience.”

The Dagohoy project is expected to cut carbon emissions by an average of 28,642 tons annually, significantly contributing to the sustainable development of Bohol. During its construction, the project created over 600 local jobs, boosting the area’s economy and supporting business activities.Bohol Island’s use of solar power to support the green development of tourism clearly shows that clean energy can drive economic growth, reduce environmental impact, and enhance the eco-friendly experience for visitors. By implementing Trina Solar’s renewable energy solutions, Bohol has set a green standard for the tourism industry. This approach not only preserves the island’s natural wonders but also plays a key role in creating a sustainable future.
