IVIWE Phandulwazi Mathe, a dedicated teacher and fervent isiXhosa activist from Lower Malepe-lepe Primary School in Tsolo, has recently unveiled his debut novel, Bafele ilize.

The publication of this novel marks a significant milestone in Mathe’s journey as an author, further cementing his role as a source of inspiration for his students.

Mathe’s influence extends beyond the class, and he was instrumental in guiding some of his students towards publishing their inaugural poetry collection, Ugadla, in 2022.

His literary journey began with the publication of his first poetry book, Umgqeku in 2019, followed by Ixhoshomba liya hluma nase Ntsindeni in 2021, a compilation that delves into the rich tapestry of Izaci namaqhalo.

Mathe’s latest work, Bafele ilize, tackles the harrowing issue of violence against women, particularly the baseless accusations of witchcraft that lead to their brutal murder.

“It is about people, especially females who are killed mercilessly; some are even accused of witchcraft. By doing this I am trying to warn perpetrators about this behaviour, because they are killing innocent people, accusing them of something of which they don’t have evidence. What led me to write it was that I was touched by incidents here in South Africa where women were murdered and torched due to these accusations,” says Mathe.

The inspiration for Bafele ilize was partly drawn from another notable work, Umkhonto kaTshiwo, which addresses similar societal issues. Mathe reflects on the ongoing relevance of these themes, emphasising the need for societal change.

“There is still a long way that we need to go, because people still do not believe the danger that carried by this belief. By writing this novel I wanted to pour out my heart about this problem,” he said.

In addition to his own literary accomplishments, Mathe shares the achievements of his former student, Lihle Mkhwambi, who has ventured into drama with his book Inyambalala, set to be published soon. Mathe’s joy in his students’ continued pursuit of literary excellence is palpable.

“It has not yet been published, but I am happy that one of my former students is still following in my footsteps.”
