At first glance, Milan appeals to the global populace for its eclectic fashion scene and architectural marvels. But under these chic wraps, the northern Italian city has kept a treasure to cherish: an epicurean delight that brings in gastronomic tradition with a modern appeal. Whilst pizzas and pastas get their rightful global recognition, other gems remain within the periphery of tourist trails, something that Lufthansa has brought to everyone’s attention with their new campaign. Think Risotto alla Milanese and Ossobuco alla Milanese, two dishes that bear Milan’s rich culinary heritage, far beyond the typical Italian fare. Lufthansa airlines took a true-blue traveller to this Italian city to sample these offerings up-close.

Partnering with influencer Tanya Khanijow, German carrier Lufthansa’s Milan Insider campaign brought the world closer to the city’s best-kept secret — be it the fashion standouts or the culinary rarities that you can only truly relish away from the well-trodden trails. Khanijow’s Milan getaway was aired on Instagram in four parts, where the third episode took the audience through the joy of sourcing fresh produce from the bustling market alleys, dining at hole-in-the-wall trattorias, and munching on Italy’s signature gelatos.

Local food experts Matteo Villa and Livio Cesareo joined the star as the trio flocked on a journey rarely seen and experienced through traditional itineraries. Kicking off the day in the bustling alleys of the market, Khanijow, Villa and Cesareo sat down for a breakfast meal at Pavé — which, as the former claims, is one of the best in Milan for a breakfast spread. A morning fare here usually falls on the sweeter side, with coffee as an accompaniment. While Khanijow relished a vegan croissant with raspberry filling, Pavé’s savoury delights are just as good— a focaccia bread and avocado toast would satiate all palates!

Then, it was time for Aperitivo, Italy’s cultural ritual of enjoying a pre-meal drink. The star enlightened the audience on how the custom developed in Milan, additionally revealing how Campari or Aperol spirits remain popular choices for this customary ritual.

The three then headed to Terraza Duomo 21, where the views could easily double as backdrops for a magazine photoshoot! This cocktail bar has the best seats — a balcony area overlooking Duomo, the city’s most iconic cathedral. Further ahead shines Navily, a district — which according to Khanijow — embodies a Venice-like ambience.

It was then time for some wine tasting, and Signorvino was their place of choice. Initially a wine cellar, the place introduced a kitchen for visitors to enjoy food alongside their wines. For their table, the group ordered some white wine alongside some authentic Milanese delicacies, all prepared with fresh ingredients and herbs that elevate the taste like none.

But can one truly say farewell to Italy without indulging in gelato? For the trio, walking into Cioccolatitaliani, a gelateria, and leaving with the signature gelato in hand became a standout experience. The day concluded with a visit to Cafe Sofa, a coffee bar which is Milan’s own concept to pay an ode to the city’s resounding cafe culture.

But when flying with Lufthansa, the culinary delights kickstart well before landing on ground. Think curated menus for vegetarians, people with food allergies, and members of certain religious faiths. In fact, the airlines also offers country-specific cuisines tailored to regional tastes on international routes. Understanding that young fliers come with their own palates — often, fussier ones! — Lufthansa offers colourful and tasty meals for children, all without skimping out on the health quotient.
